Neurology

Neurology is the branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. The nervous system is a complex, sophisticated system that regulates and coordinates all bodily activities. It has two major divisions:

  • Central nervous system (CNS): The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord. The brain is the center of the nervous system and controls all thought, action, and sensation. The spinal cord is a long, thin bundle of nerves that runs from the brain down the back and carries messages to and from the brain.
  • Peripheral nervous system (PNS): The PNS consists of all the nerves that connect the CNS to the rest of the body. These nerves carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord, allowing us to move, feel, and sense the world around us.

Neurologists are doctors who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders. They have extensive training in the nervous system and its disorders. Neurologists use a variety of diagnostic tools, including physical exams, blood tests, imaging tests, and electrophysiological studies, to diagnose neurological disorders. They also provide treatment for these disorders, which may include medication, surgery, physical therapy, and other therapies.

Some of the most common neurological disorders include:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Stroke
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Epilepsy
  • Migraines
  • Headaches
  • Back pain
  • Neuropathy
  • Brain tumors

Neurology is a rapidly growing field of medicine. New research is constantly being conducted to learn more about the nervous system and its disorders. This research is leading to new and improved treatments for neurological disorders, helping to improve the quality of life for millions of people.

If you have any concerns about your neurological health, please see a neurologist for an evaluation. Early diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders can often improve the outcome and prevent further complications.
